I just replaced Bind with "dnscache" by Daniel Bernstein on our home firewall. So far, it's a lot faster at name resolution - and no glitches. Bind really is the 800lb gorilla of the DNS world! I also setup a Squid proxy (non-transparent), and am giving it a go. I've used it to speed up client's LANs before - never for a small network. So far, so good. It's cacheing seems to speed up a lot of sites, particularly ones I visit a lot.
